Today our driver was Oscar. He picked us up right on time in yet another luxurious Mercedes coach. Our drive south from Madrid was through the industrial corridor where we saw countless furniture stores and factories. Once in Toledo we circled the ancient city walls and then up to a vantage point for a grand view of the old city.
First up was a tour of Museo de Santa Cruz, the main art collection of the city. The building was a hospital dating back to the 13th century and of moorish design. We viewed a fine collection of ceramic tiles, paintings (both modern and medieval), and artifacts from the various occupational periods-Roman, Jewish, Moor, and Christian.
Next up was a visit to the cloisters of the monastery dedicated to Ferdinand and Isabella. From there we toured the Jewish quarter and the main synagogue. Up the hill we saw the El Greco masterpiece. After lunch we had free time to see the cathedral, alcazar (castle), and wander the narrow streets.
We returned to Madrid via the same route and said goodbye to our driver back at the hotel. It was a full day AND we still have a wine and tapas tour coming later tonight. Oh no, more food and Spanish wine! It keeps getting better and better and it's only Day 4. Sixty-two to go. :-)
