We took rovers across the White Desert and met our driver and bus on the "road." From there we continued our journey further south-400 kilometers to Dakhla where we will stay the night.
Along the way we stopped at El Farafra Oasis. A natural hot spring and a chance for an "au natural" bath. The water was bathtub hot and wonderful. Several of the shameless ones jumped in along with our driver and cooks.
In the town we toured a small private art gallery with its charming owner and had lunch at a local cafe where our camp cooks once again made us a great meal. Sated and happy we boarded our bus for our continuing southern journey. More desert and surprises lay before us.
...an hour later...
Surprise 1: Reman could not find his wallet after leaving town so 30 miles down the highway we had to turn around and go back to our last stop.
Surprise 2: Reman's phone has no reception. A few miles back we see a guy standing on a fence post holding a cell phone. A little coaxing and Renam is able to put a call through to our last stop (the police check point) and they have his wallet. It was found on the ground outside.
...back on track...
We drove further south along the rim of the valley passing through many well-fed agricultural projects until finally reaching Dakhala. We were surprised to see the long lines at the gas station. Trucks, tractors, and other vehicles were simply parked and empty waiting in line for the next gas delivery. At the gas lumps were armed guards to quell any unhappiness from those impatiently waiting. So-o-o glad we had full tanks on the bus.
Our hotel, the Desert Lodge Resort, was lovely with a hot spring pool and grand buffet dinner.
Because of our delays today we will include the two missed elements tomorrow morning.
