We left the monasteries for our six hour drive back to Athens. The drive was nicely broken up with stops fur lunch and breaks. Mid afternoon we passes the location of the Spartan-Persian battle of "the 300." Alex gave us another history lesson. Very cool!
We reached Athens just before the big austerity demonstration and parliamentary vote. We'll be staying inside tonight...smile.
Update: Don't believe the pictures on TV! It is a LOT calmer than it looks. The teargas was confined to one corner of the square and only for a few minutes-enough time for reporters to take photos and exploit the story. We sat in the hotel lounge just a few blocks away and watched it live on TV. Our Greek friends on the bar were greatly disappointed by the negative publicity given by CNN...sad.
The continuing adventures of Tom and Bobbie Lucido and the World Travel Club...this year we descend upon the Mediterranean starting in Madrid. We will travel through Andalusia to Portugal. Flying to Casablanca we travel to Marrakech before departing for Munich where we will spend a day exploring before catching our continuing flight to Turkey. Next we will board a Greek Isle cruise. We’ll visit ancient Greece before ending our nine week journey in Egypt and Jordan.
