We were up and out the door at 8:00 AM for a full day tour of the sights surrounding Cairo. Our guide Ramon took us south to Daktar to view the first pyramid built using straight sides. It had . First varied angles and looked more domelike. Next was the magnificent first pyramid, the red pyramid, built in 2500 BC by king Neifru.
Next we traveled to Memphis and the giant statue of Ramses II. From there we headed to Saqqara and step pyramid of Imhotep. We also viewed several minor tombs. We took a lunch break at a traditional Egyptian BBQ. The food was great!
We then had a 90 minute drive to Giza, site of the great pyramids of Cheops and Khafre. The highlight of our visit was climbing down into the center of the pyramid. Yikes. The tunnels were very narrow and steep. Next we visited the Solar Boat-fully intact and found buried next to the great pyramid!
Next up was a visit to the Sphinx. Even more magnificent up close. We ended our day with a visit to a first class papyrus factory and gallery. We purchased a " few" really nice renderings of famous Egyptian tomb paintings.
Ten hours touring and we still have dinner and nightclubbing on the plan tonight. Does it ever end! Ha- ha
