Today we toured the archeological museum of Canakkale and saw artifacts from the Troad (area surrounding Troy). Fascinating.
We then crossed the Dardanelles by ferry to the battlefields of Gallopoli and the ANZAC memorial. Hundreds of headstones marked the graves of the Australian, Kiwi, and Turkish soldiers who died in the campaign. Sobering and interesting.
Afterward we continued up the European peninsula of Turkey to Istanbul and our hotel. Along the way we stopped at a "fast food" restaurant along the turnpike. We traced the coast for miles until reaching the outskirts of Istanbul. It was then another 35 miles before we reached the city center...it's a big place! Fourteen million people-15% of the entire Turkish population.
Tonight we will explore the Istanbul neighborhood near our hotel for a restaurant that has local music.
