The Monastaries

This morning we toured the Byzantine monasteries of Metera. We visited two the the remaining seven still open. Each of them perched precariously on top of the rock monoliths of the region.

Of the two we toured access was tover steel bridges and crevasses as deep as 290 feet. These crevasses created the natural protection and thus the isolation of the sanctuaries. For one, after crossing the bridge we climbed 140 steps to the entrance gate.

The frescos and the iconography were stunning. The monasteries date back to 1200 AD.
